Volvo EM90: Upcoming Model Details

The new pictures released by Volvo showcase a bluff, boxy design for the EM90. The design is inspired by cityscapes and glassy skyscrapers found in rapidly growing Chinese cities. The EM90 features Volvo's signature 'Thor's Hammer' headlight design and tall, slender tail lights that reference the city environments it is intended for. However, Volvo UK's plans to focus on SUVs and crossovers may mean that the EM90 will not be available in the UK.

Volvo has always aimed to position itself as a premium brand, and the EM90 continues that trend in a slightly unconventional way. While the driver is well taken care of, the main focus is on the passengers, particularly those in the four individual seats in the rear cabin. These seats offer 'zero gravity' padding for supreme comfort, and each occupant has control over their own personal space, including heating, ventilation, and other settings. The middle row seats can recline and be equipped with massage features and other luxuries. Noise-cancelling technology, air suspension, and 'silent tyres' contribute to a sense of tranquility. The rear passengers can enjoy a 15.6-inch screen that unfolds from the roof, along with a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo system, creating a 'private concert hall on the move.' The interior can be configured using screens, voice commands, and 'smart surfaces,' while ambient lighting and a panoramic roof enhance the overall experience. The interior is designed to resemble a Scandinavian living room, with sustainably sourced materials like recycled plastics and reclaimed woods.

The EM90 is likely to share technology with the EX90 luxury SUV, but with a focus on range rather than power and performance. The electric motor produces just under 150 horsepower, which is sufficient for smooth and refined city transportation. The large battery promises over 400 miles of range between charges, according to Chinese testing figures.

Currently, the EM90 is designed specifically for the Chinese market, and there are no plans to sell it in Europe. However, if the sales of the Lexus LM350h, a similar vehicle, are successful, Volvo may reconsider its original plans.

In addition to the EM90, Volvo has other cars scheduled for release this year. The smaller EX30 will offer a more affordable option for driving an electric Volvo, while the larger and more luxurious EX90 SUV will provide a European-centric take on the themes of the EM90.
