Volvo EM90: Updated Model Revealed

The new pictures released by Volvo showcase a bold and boxy design for their latest model, the EM90. Inspired by cityscapes and glassy skyscrapers, the design is aimed at the rapidly growing Chinese market. The front of the car features Volvo's signature 'Thor's Hammer' headlight design, while the back boasts tall and slender tail lights that reference urban environments. However, there is some disappointing news for UK customers, as Volvo's plans to focus on SUVs and crossovers may mean that the EM90 will not be available in the country.

Volvo has always aimed to position itself as a premium brand, and the EM90 continues this trend in a slightly unconventional way. While the driver is well taken care of, the main focus is on the passengers, particularly those in the four individual seats in the rear cabin. These seats are equipped with 'zero gravity' padding for supreme comfort, and each occupant has control over heating, ventilation, and other settings to create their own personalized space. The middle row seats can recline and be equipped with luxurious features such as massage functions. To enhance the overall comfort, the car also offers noise-cancelling technology, air suspension, and 'silent tires'. Entertainment is provided by a 15.6-inch screen that can be unfolded from the roof, accompanied by a 21-speaker stereo system by Bowers & Wilkins to create a 'private concert hall on the move'. The interior can be customized through screens, voice control, and 'smart surfaces', while ambient lighting and a panoramic roof add to the sense of spaciousness. Volvo describes the overall vibe as resembling a "Scandinavian living room on the move".

The EM90 is likely to share technology with the EX90 luxury SUV, although the electric drive system has been tuned more for range than power and performance. With just under 150 horsepower from the electric motor, the car provides smooth and refined transportation around the city. The large battery promises a range of over 400 miles between charges, according to Chinese testing figures.

As of now, the EM90 is primarily targeted at the Chinese market, and there are no plans to sell it in Europe. However, if the sales of the Lexus LM350h, a competitor, prove successful, Volvo may reconsider its original plans. In addition to the EM90, Volvo has other cars scheduled for release this year. The smaller EX30 will offer a more affordable option for driving an electric Volvo, while the larger and more luxurious EX90 SUV will provide a European-centric take on the themes of the EM90.
