VW ID.5 GTX: A Perfect Electric Vehicle for Families

The VW ID.5 is the largest car in VW's pure electric range, until the ID.7 launches later this year. Unlike other car manufacturers, VW has chosen to keep its electric line separate, with all models sporting the ID. prefix. This allows the electric cars to be designed specifically for the electric platform and enables a more aerodynamic body to reduce drag. However, this approach may not generate the same loyalty from drivers as electric versions of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.

The closest ICE model to the ID.5 is the T-Roc, a mid-sized SUV that joined the line-up in 2017. VW currently does not have electric equivalents of its larger Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, and the premium saloon equivalent, the Arteon (ID.7), will be added later this year.

VW's ID.5 launched in 2022, with the sportier GTX version also joining the line-up. The standard model starts from £50,710, while the GTX demands a slightly higher price of £56,545. The ID.5 is not currently available in the US but is expected to come to Australia in 2024. Compared to a Tesla Model 3, the ID.5 offers a similar price range but with slightly lower range and acceleration. Cheaper alternatives in a similar size range include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, while the Audi Q4 e-tron offers a slightly higher price for similar specifications. The ID.4, which offers a more traditional SUV rear, starts at around £38,845 and goes up to £52,865 for the GTX model.

The ID.5 has a design that combines SUV and hatchback features. It can comfortably accommodate a family of four and has a size that is not overly big. The car features 20-inch alloys, black wheel arches, large air intakes at the front, and a two-tone paintwork with a choice of five colors. The ID.5 GTX offers all-wheel drive and a 0-62mph acceleration of 6.3 seconds. Both the GTX and standard ID.5 offer respectable range and economy thanks to the car's aerodynamic design.

The ID.5 is equipped with various tech features. The exterior features IQ.Light with micro LEDs for a bright and clear view of the road. Inside, there is a 12-inch center display, a smaller 5.3-inch display behind the wheel, and connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The car also includes a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and Park Assist Plus for automated parking. However, the main display feels somewhat disconnected from the overall design and the touch-sensitive buttons and screen surround have a plasticky feel.

Driving the ID.5 is a pleasant experience. It strikes a balance between size and power, making it responsive and suitable for everyday driving. The range of the ID.5 is around 300 miles, and it has a max DC charge of 135kW. Overall, the ID.5 is a solid choice for VW owners and those looking for a family-sized car with SUV features. However, it may not offer the same level of excitement or luxury as other electric car models on the market.
