Volkswagen has officially begun production of its ID.7 electric saloon in preparation for its launch in Europe later this year. The news was announced through a social media post, marking the "symbolic start of production" at the Emden plant in Germany. This follows a small production run that took place in June.

Thomas Shafer, the CEO of Volkswagen passenger cars, expressed his praise for the new model and the team behind it. He commended the colleagues in Emden for their dedication and efforts in ensuring a successful start to production.

The ID.7, which was unveiled earlier this year, is positioned as a comfortable limousine for long-distance travel. It introduces a new segment within the ID family and indirectly replaces the Passat and Arteon models. The car is designed to offer long ranges, fast charging, a spacious interior, and intuitive operation.

Competing with the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, the ID.7 will provide a range of up to 435 miles and support charging rates of up to 200kW. Two variants will be available: the entry-level ID.7 Pro model with a 77kWh battery offering up to 382 miles of range, and the Pro S derivative with an 82kWh pack for the headline 435-mile range. Both models feature a rear-mounted 286hp single motor, which is the most powerful and highest-torque electric drive motor in a Volkswagen ID. model to date. A dual-motor four-wheel drive version will be released later on.

The Emden plant is exclusively manufacturing the ID.7 for the European and North American markets. Since 2019, the plant has received over one billion euros in investment to convert it for e-mobility production.

In addition to the ID.7, Volkswagen plans to launch 10 new electric models between 2023 and 2026. These include the new ID.3, the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz released this year, a compact electric SUV in 2026, and the production version of the ID. 2all, which will be priced at less than €25k. Volkswagen aims to have the widest range of electric vehicles compared to its competitors and has set a target of achieving an electric car share of 80% in Europe by 2030, with plans to exclusively produce electric vehicles in Europe by 2033.
