In Michael Mann's new Ferrari movie, there are no 250 GTOs, Daytonas, or Testarossas. This is because the film takes place in 1957, years before those cars were introduced. The movie, titled "Ferrari," aims to delve into the mind and soul of the legendary Enzo Ferrari, played by Adam Driver, and goes beyond the flashy exterior. Unlike other companies that used racing to sell their cars, Ferrari sold cars solely to fund his racing endeavors.

The film itself is meticulously designed and constructed, much like the iconic Ferraris it showcases. It captures the essence of Enzo Ferrari, who was both a myth and a complex figure. The inspiration for the film came from the 1991 biography "Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine" by Brock Yates, which provides astute character analysis and sheds light on Ferrari's reputation as a dream builder. However, not all aspects of the book made it into the film due to its non-linear approach.

The movie begins with black-and-white footage of a young Enzo Ferrari, challenging the notion of him being a mediocre driver. It then transitions to 1957, where Ferrari is portrayed through concise scenes that establish his character and relationships. The film explores Ferrari's complex love triangle with his wife Laura, played by Penélope Cruz, and his mistress Lina Lardi, played by Shailene Woodley. Mann captures Ferrari's unempathetic nature and his manipulative tactics to fuel his drivers' competitive drive.

The climax of the film revolves around the infamous deadly accident at the 1957 Mille Miglia race. Mann's portrayal of the race is thrilling and captures the recklessness and thrill of racing during that era. The consequences of Ferrari's actions, both on and off the track, are explored, and Driver's performance allows the audience to empathize with Ferrari while also revealing his imperious nature.

While racing and business play essential roles in the film, the love triangle takes center stage. Mann downplays Ferrari's complexity in this aspect, focusing more on his love for Lina and Piero and his inability to leave his crumbling marriage with Laura. Cruz's portrayal of Laura adds emotional depth to the film and explores the dynamics of their relationship.

The film concludes with a sweet moment between Enzo and his son Piero, which some critics argue feels tacked on and abrupt. However, it is reflective of Enzo's desire to shape his own image and seek the best possible outcome. Ultimately, the film portrays the unavoidable reality that Ferrari faced both in his personal life and in the world of racing.

Ferrari premiered at the New York Film Festival and is set to be released in theaters nationwide on Christmas.
