Zeekr X review

Verdict: Zeekr is set to challenge Europe's premium car manufacturers with the introduction of the Zeekr X. While the small electric SUV has its flaws, it offers a classy interior and unique design and technology features that set it apart from its competitors. The Zeekr X is most enjoyable as a relaxing runabout, so the flagship AWD powertrain may be unnecessary for most buyers. However, the small price difference may make it hard to resist.

Zeekr is a relatively unknown Chinese brand that is entering the UK market alongside other Chinese brands like BYD and Ora. However, the Zeekr X is not your typical European-market small premium SUV. Zeekr is a luxury electric mobility brand owned by Geely, a Chinese conglomerate that also owns Lotus, Volvo, Polestar, and Smart. The Zeekr X is a compact electric luxury car that shares Geely's SEA platform with other models like the Smart #1 and #3 and the Volvo EX30. The positioning of the Zeekr X in relation to its similarly sized stablemates raises some questions.

Zeekr, founded in 2021, already has three models on sale, including the Zeekr X. The Zeekr X is slightly longer than the Smart #1, providing ample passenger space for four adults. It offers a 362-litre boot, which is larger than the Smart's but smaller than the Peugeot E-2008's. The Zeekr X falls between supermini-sized SUV models and larger mid-size SUVs in terms of size. It is available in rear-wheel-drive, single-motor form or with dual motors and four-wheel drive. The dual-motor version boasts impressive power and acceleration.

The Zeekr X is equipped with a 69kWh battery that provides a competitive range of 277 miles for the single-motor version and 264 miles for the dual-motor version. However, using the performance capabilities of the car may reduce the range. The Zeekr X offers convenient charging options, including a 22kW onboard AC charger and a 150kW DC rapid-charging capacity. The car also features a circular digital display on the external B-pillar panel to easily check the charging status.

The Zeekr X stands out with its bold styling, reminiscent of the BMW i3. The interior features a minimalist design with a central 14.6-inch touchscreen that controls various functions. The overall design and quality of the interior reflect Zeekr's premium aspirations, although some lower-quality materials are present. The car offers limited storage space but includes unique features like a wireless phone-charging slot and a built-in sunglasses holder. The Zeekr X's infotainment system includes a pet mode that allows owners to leave their pets in the car with climate control and comforting messages displayed on the external display. The car also features external speakers that can play various sounds and music.

The touchscreen interface of the Zeekr X can be complex and less responsive at times, but it includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easier navigation and entertainment options. The car also features a standard head-up display and a clear and concise navigation system. The driving experience of the Zeekr X is more akin to a compact MPV than an SUV, with a spacious interior and an upright driving position. The dual-motor variant offers impressive power but can be challenging to control due to its size.
