【Summary】Alfa Romeo's new small all-electric SUV, rumored to be called Brennero, has been leaked in images. The compact EV will be the entry-level car for Alfa Romeo and is based on the e-CMP platform. It will be the smallest model in Alfa's lineup, positioned below the Tonale SUV. The interior features a digital driver's screen, and the car is expected to have spirited driving dynamics. It will use a 54kWh battery/single electric motor setup and may offer mild-hybrid petrol engines.
Pictures of Alfa Romeo's upcoming small all-electric SUV have been leaked online ahead of its anticipated release in early 2024. The compact electric vehicle, rumored to be named Brennero, will serve as Alfa Romeo's entry-level car, although the name has not yet been officially confirmed.
The new EV will be based on the e-CMP platform, which is also used by its stablemates, the Fiat 600 and Jeep Avenger Stellantis. It will be the smallest model in Alfa Romeo's lineup, positioned below the Tonale SUV, and is expected to have a starting price of around £35,000.
Upon closer inspection of the leaked images, it is evident that the new Alfa Romeo EV features the brand's distinctive styling cues, including the iconic scudetto grille and phone-dial wheels. Additionally, there are shared exterior components with the Fiat 600 and Jeep Avenger, such as the mirror caps, windshield, and door handles. The front of the vehicle showcases split LED headlights beneath a sculpted bonnet, while its strong rear shoulder line and short overhangs give it a bold stance.
Interior images reveal a digital driver's screen, similar to the technology found in other Alfa Romeo models, displaying useful information on a central readout.
In an interview with Auto Express, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato essentially confirmed that the car set to be released in 2024 is a smaller version of the Tonale SUV. He explained that the company aims to expand its presence in Europe's thriving small SUV segment, following the introduction of the Tonale. Imparato expressed confidence in the ability of the CMP architecture, shared with other vehicles like the Peugeot 2008 and DS 3 Crossback, to deliver the spirited driving dynamics that Alfa Romeo customers expect.
The upcoming small crossover EV will utilize the same 54kWh battery and single electric motor setup as the Avenger, delivering 154bhp and 260Nm of torque. This configuration should provide a range of approximately 248 miles, matching that of the Jeep Avenger. It is also expected that mild-hybrid petrol engines will be offered, although it remains unclear if they will be available in the UK market.
Alfa Romeo has confirmed plans to phase out internal combustion engines (ICE) starting in 2027, meaning that the Brennero will only be available as an electric vehicle. Furthermore, Alfa Romeo will be the first brand within the Stellantis group to utilize the bespoke all-electric STLA platform technology. The company has announced that a standalone electric model will be released in 2025, followed by another electric vehicle in 2026.
Overall, Alfa Romeo is positioning itself for a future focused on electric and hybrid powertrains, aiming to provide customers with the performance and driveability expected from the brand.
