2024 Ford Puma EV: Increased Range, Competitive Pricing
【Summary】Ford is planning to phase out combustion-engined vehicles in Europe and the UK by 2030, and the Puma EV is a crucial part of this transition. The electric subcompact crossover is expected to have a starting price of €36,000 and a driving range of around 400 kilometers. It will be produced alongside the combustion-engined versions of the Puma. The Puma EV will be based on the Global B-car vehicle architecture and will likely feature one-pedal driving mode.
Ford of Europe is facing challenges in market share and profitability, but the company has a plan to transition to an all-electric lineup in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The Puma subcompact crossover, manufactured in Romania, is a crucial part of this transition.
The Puma was introduced in 2019 and is named after a small coupe produced in the late 90s and early 2000s. It is designed by a team led by Thomas Morel and serves as a replacement for the Fiesta in Ford's European lineup. The Puma offers a range of 1.0- and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines and is only available in front-wheel drive. Ford plans to introduce an electric version of the Puma in 2024.
The German motoring publication Auto Bild predicts that the Puma EV will have a starting price of 36,000 euros, which is approximately $39,300 dollars. While this may seem expensive, it is in line with other B-segment crossovers in the market, such as Peugeot's e-2008. The Puma EV is expected to have a driving range of around 400 kilometers according to the WLTP combined estimate, making it an attractive option in the competitive electric vehicle segment.
The Puma EV will be produced alongside the combustion-engined versions of the vehicle. The platform used for the Puma EV is adapted from the Global B-car vehicle architecture, which is also used for the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier vans. These vans offer a range of engine options, including a 136-ps electric drive unit.
The E-Tourneo Courier, a five-seater van with electric capabilities, was launched in May 2023. It can add 87 kilometers of driving range in just 10 minutes of charging at a DC fast charge. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes less than 35 minutes, while a full overnight AC charge takes 5.7 hours.
The press release for the E-Tourneo Courier confirms that the Puma EV will be available by 2024. It is expected that the Puma EV will have a one-pedal driving mode, similar to the E-Tourneo Courier and E-Transit Courier panel van. However, Ford has not yet provided details on the battery capacity and WLTP combined range of either van.
