Women make up nearly 24 percent of the customers purchasing electric vehicles from Tata Motors, which holds a dominant 72 percent share of the Indian electric car market. Vivek Srivatsa, Head-Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., attributes this trend to factors such as the ease of driving, safety features, and the increasing availability of charging infrastructure.

In the past, electric vehicles were often seen as a secondary choice when buying a car. However, Srivatsa notes that a majority of customers now view them as their primary choice. He also highlights Kerala and Maharashtra as leading states in terms of electric vehicle adoption.

Speaking at a women's car rally in Kochi, Srivatsa commended customers for their quick adaptation to change, as evidenced by the significant growth in Tata EV sales in recent years. He reveals that the company sold approximately 1,200 EVs in FY20, followed by around 4,200 units in FY21, and approximately 19,000 units in FY22. Last year alone, Tata Motors sold 50,000 units, representing a growth rate of 154 percent compared to FY22.

Srivatsa further shares that Tata Motors achieved a major milestone by surpassing 100,000 EV sales in the country. The first 10,000 units were sold over a period of 44 months since the launch of the first product in 2017. The subsequent sales of 10,000-50,000 units took 15 months, and the next 50,000 units were sold in just nine months. He predicts that the company will achieve the next 50,000 sales within the next 5-6 months.

Tata Motors plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup by introducing six more EV products by 2025, bringing the total number of variants to 10. In Q1 FY24, the company achieved its highest-ever quarterly sales of 19,346 vehicles, representing a 105 percent increase compared to Q1 FY23. Srivatsa attributes this growth to the strong market response to the Tiago EV, while demand for other EV models remained consistent.

Finally, Srivatsa praises the charging infrastructure in Kerala, considering it to be among the best in the country.
