Amazon Expands Rivian Electric Vehicle Fleet

Amazon has reached a significant milestone with its Rivian-built Electric Delivery Vehicle (EDV) fleet. The company recently announced that it now has over 10,000 EDVs on the road, doubling the fleet's size in just four months.

This increase in the number of EDVs suggests that production at Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois, has ramped up in recent months. In July 2023, Amazon announced that it had reached the milestone of 5,000 EDVs on US roads. It took a year for Amazon to receive the first 5,000 Rivian EDVs, from July 2022 when the company introduced the first vans in its electric delivery fleet to July 2023.

Although Rivian does not provide a breakdown of vehicle production by model, the company reported manufacturing a record 16,304 battery-electric vehicles, including the R1S, R1T, and EDV models, in the third quarter of 2023 at its Illinois factory.

By acquiring 10,000 EDVs, Amazon has added 10 percent of the 100,000 Rivian vans it committed to purchasing in 2019 and putting on the road by 2030. It is worth noting that Rivian missed its initial target of delivering the first 10,000 electric vans to Amazon by 2022.

Amazon has expressed its commitment to maintaining the fastest rollout of an electric delivery fleet in the United States. The company shared some interesting statistics about the Rivian EDV at its Delivering the Future event on October 17. Since July 2022, when the electric delivery vans were first deployed, Amazon has successfully delivered more than 260 million packages to customers in over 1,800 cities across the US.

Rivian EDVs are currently operating in various cities, including Alpharetta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Grand Rapids, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Madison, Miami, Nashville, New York, Newark, Oakland, Omaha, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Provo, Rochester, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa, and Toledo. Additionally, the company is expanding its presence to cities such as Anaheim, Green Bay, Lexington, and Silver Spring.

Amazon is also working on upgrading its charging infrastructure to support its fast-growing fleet. The company has already installed more than 12,000 chargers across over 100 delivery stations.

Furthermore, Amazon is not only electrifying its delivery fleet in the United States but also globally. In Germany, for instance, the company started incorporating Rivian EDV 500 vans into its fleet in July 2023.

By 2030, Amazon estimates that its fleet of 100,000 electric vans will result in millions of metric tons of carbon savings per year.
