Suzuki plans to export Indian EVs to Japan in 2025

Japan's Suzuki Motor is set to export electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured at its Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant to Japan by 2025, according to the Nikkei daily. The move is part of Suzuki's plan to establish India as its global electric car manufacturing hub. In addition, Suzuki is considering supplying EVs made in India to partner Toyota Motor for the European market. The report suggests that if Suzuki decides to supply to Toyota, the EVs will be sold under the Toyota brand.
Last year, Suzuki announced a significant investment of Rs 10,440 crore in India for the production of electric vehicles and batteries. A portion of this investment, Rs 3100 crore, will be used to increase the manufacturing capacity for EVs at Suzuki Motor Gujarat by 2025. Another Rs 7300 crore will be allocated for setting up a plant to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles by 2026. The remaining funds will be used to establish a vehicle recycling plant by Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu in 2025.
The State of Gujarat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Suzuki Motor Corporation on March 19, 2022, during the India-Japan Economic Forum in New Delhi. The MoU was witnessed by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
