A man has been taken into custody and a dog has been seized by Merseyside officers following reports of a three-year-old girl being bitten in the face. The incident occurred outside the Market Tavern pub in Kirkby, northeast of Liverpool.

The toddler was immediately taken to the hospital to receive treatment for her injuries, which are believed to be serious but not life-threatening. The police have seized the dog involved in the attack and it will undergo examination to determine its breed.

The authorities have arrested a 31-year-old man from Ormskirk on suspicion of affray and having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place. He is currently in custody and will be questioned.

Chief Inspector Jim Wilde described the attack as horrific, stating that the young girl is receiving the best possible care and treatment for her injuries at Alder Hey. He expressed hopes for her speedy recovery. The dog involved in the incident will be humanely destroyed, and efforts are underway to establish the exact sequence of events.

Despite speaking to several witnesses, the police are appealing for more individuals to come forward as the area was busy at the time of the attack.
