Audi's groundbreaking electric motor for next-gen EV platform with Porsche

Audi and Porsche have begun building electric motors for the long-awaited Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV platform. The PPE platform, which was announced in 2018, aims to lower costs, enable faster charging, and offer the latest in digitalization and autonomous driving. It was also intended to speed up the rollout of new Audi and Porsche electric models. However, the platform has faced several delays, pushing back the launch of highly-anticipated EVs such as the electric Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron.

At a recent Volkswagen board of directors meeting, the automaker revealed plans to further delay its 1.2 software, which is set to power new Porsche and Audi EVs, by another 16-18 weeks. These delays have caused the launch of new EVs, including the all-electric Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron, to be pushed back by several years.

Audi recently announced the start of electric motor production for the PPE EV platform at its manufacturing site in Győr, Hungary. The site is predestined for the production of these highly compact and efficient electric motors. It also builds drive systems for the Audi Q8 e-tron and is setting up a production area for electric motors used in VW Group MEBeco-based vehicles.

Audi has established three new production lines and around 700 employees are working in three shifts to build up to 2,000 e-motors a day for the upcoming PPE. The site supplies both Porsche and Audi. The production of the first PPE-based Audi model, the Audi Q6 e-tron, is expected to start by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the Porsche Macan EV is expected to launch on the PPE platform next year, with the goal of delivering it to customers in 2024.
