Barrier to EV adoption

More than 60% of drivers in the UK have expressed their reluctance to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) due to the high cost, according to the National Franchised Dealers Association's (NFDA) Consumer Attitude Survey 2023. The survey revealed that price was the main barrier for 62% of respondents. Additionally, 57% cited a lack of charging infrastructure as a major obstacle, while 54% expressed concerns about the battery life of existing EV models.

The study also found that 55% of respondents aged 55 and above stated that they had no interest in ever buying an EV. However, 42% of participants mentioned that lower running costs could potentially incentivize them to switch from their current petrol or diesel vehicles.

Sue Robinson, CEO of NFDA, emphasized the significance of the Consumer Attitude Survey, which provides valuable insights into consumer behavior and the evolving automotive industry. She urged individuals to consider the concerns surrounding the cost of living and to find a balance between price and environmental considerations when transitioning to EVs. NFDA plans to conduct the survey annually to track changes in consumer attitudes and gather data for informed decision-making in the future.
