Solar car park powers workplace EV charging in UK
【Summary】UK's first solar car park has been launched at Eastbourne District General Hospital. The car park features over 2,400 solar panels across eight canopies, providing renewable energy for the hospital and reducing reliance on the national grid. It also includes 10 solar-powered EV charge points for staff use, providing workplace electric vehicle charging. The project is part of a wider energy management contract to target carbon savings of 4,129 tonnes per year.
A new solar car park has been launched at Eastbourne District General Hospital (EDGH), featuring staff EV charge points. This solar car park, installed by Veolia and 3ti, is the first of its kind in the UK, providing renewable energy for a hospital.
The solar array consists of more than 2,412 solar panels spread across eight canopies, covering 400 car parking spaces. With an estimated annual production of over 1,000MWh, the solar car park will help reduce the hospital's reliance on electricity from the national grid, as well as decrease energy costs and emissions.
In addition to generating renewable energy, the solar car park also caters to the need for workplace electric vehicle charging. It offers 10 solar-powered EV charge points for staff use. The canopies not only provide shelter from the elements but also enhance security through overhead lighting.
This initiative is part of a £27m energy management contract between Veolia and EDGH, aimed at implementing various energy upgrades and achieving carbon savings of 4,129 tonnes per year.
Tim Evans, founder and CEO at 3ti, expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating that it benefits all parties involved. The solar car park provides low-cost and low-carbon electricity for the hospital, while car park users benefit from the canopies' cover and lighting. Furthermore, staff with electric vehicles can conveniently charge their cars while at work. Evans emphasized how this project demonstrates how car parks can be transformed into renewable energy sources, leaving a positive impact for future generations.
