Barrier to EV adoption

Over 60% of drivers in the UK have stated that they are not willing to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) due to the high price tag associated with them. This information comes from the National Franchised Dealers Association's (NFDA) Consumer Attitude Survey 2023, which revealed that 62% of respondents considered price to be the main barrier preventing them from making the switch to an EV. Additionally, 57% of participants expressed concerns about the lack of charging infrastructure, while 54% had reservations about the battery life of existing EV models.

The survey also highlighted that more than half of the respondents aged 55 and above (55%) had no interest in purchasing an EV at all. On the other hand, 42% of those surveyed indicated that lower running costs could potentially motivate them to switch from their current petrol or diesel vehicles.

Sue Robinson, CEO of the NFDA, emphasized the significance of the Consumer Attitude Survey, as it provides valuable insights into consumer behavior and the evolving automotive industry. She urged everyone to take note of the concerns regarding the cost of living and to find a balance between price and environmental considerations when transitioning to EVs. The NFDA plans to conduct the survey annually in order to track changes in consumer attitudes and gather data that will inform future decision-making processes.
