BMW X4 phased out, X2 to take its place

BMW is reportedly planning to phase out the X4, a model that has been in the company's portfolio for almost a decade. As a result, the all-new X2 has experienced significant growth in all directions and now closely resembles a miniature X4.

The X4, a model that BMW has been selling since 2014, is being retired by the carmaker that practically invented the Coupe body type. In its place, BMW has introduced the X2, which features a tilted rear window and sloping roofline that make it resemble a baby X4 even more than before. The X2 also comes equipped with the xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard in the United States. These changes were made to enhance the previously toned-down model.

The 2024 BMW X2 has increased in size in every dimension. It is now 194 millimeters longer, 21 millimeters wider, and 64 millimeters taller compared to its predecessor. The X2's dimensions now closely match those of the X4, resulting in more space for passengers and a larger cargo area. The X2 also boasts more aggressive styling, larger alloy wheels, and new high-end equipment, suggesting that BMW is trying to fill a future gap that will be left by the retirement of the X4.

It is clear that BMW is not planning to release an internal combustion engine-powered next-generation X4. If there is to be a new X4, it will likely be an electric variant produced at the BMW plant in Debrecen, Hungary, where the carmaker is investing $2 billion in a battery plant for electric vehicles. BMW is preparing for an all-electric future.

In addition to its larger size, the X2 has also seen an increase in price. The model is now $5,500 more expensive than its predecessor, starting at $42,995, including the destination fee.

The X2 already has an electric variant called the iX2 xDrive30, which is powered by two electric motors and offers 313 horsepower and 364 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds and has a range of 279 miles on a single charge. With the X4 being phased out, the X2 is ready to take its place and fill the void. It remains to be seen if an M version of the X2 will be powerful enough to match the performance of the X4 M.
