BYD electric ute patent images hint at imminent release
【Summary】BYD is set to release an electric ute by the end of the year, according to leaked images. The patent images show a large BYD badge on the front of the vehicle, similar to the popular BYD Atto 3 electric SUV. The electric ute has been spotted undergoing testing in China and will compete with models like Ford's F-150 Lightning and Geely's Radar RD6. BYD continues to dominate the electric vehicle market, recently selling a record 151,193 electric vehicles in September.
Electric cars are gaining more traction in the overall car market, with recent data showing that 8% of all new vehicle sales in Australia were full battery electric EVs. However, electric utes have not contributed significantly to this uptake.
In the United States, electric utes like the Rivian and the upcoming Cybertruck are hitting the roads. In Australia, the focus has been on conversions and the release of the Chinese model LDV, although Toyota has also showcased its city-focused electric concept, the Hilux.
One company that may change the landscape is BYD, as leaked images have emerged showcasing its own electric ute. According to reports from CNC, the vehicle is expected to be released by the end of the year.
A patent of the BYD electric pickup truck reveals a large BYD badge on the front, in contrast to the smaller badging on the popular BYD Atto 3 electric SUV. The upcoming ute has been spotted multiple times in recent months during on-road and off-road testing in China.
Back in April, BYD's electric ute was seen undergoing various stages of testing, heavily camouflaged to resemble its patent. From certain angles, it bears resemblance to the Ford Ranger, while from other angles, it hints at the Dodge RAM four-door truck.
BYD's electric ute will compete with Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV. Locally, it will also compete with the LDV eT60, which was released in late 2022.
BYD continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup and has sold 151,193 fully electric vehicles, setting another record in September. The company has seen success in markets like Australia, Thailand, Brazil, and various European countries.
With more models set for launch in Australia in the coming months, it is likely that the BYD ute could make its way to the local market in 2024.
In recent data released by Toyota, the brand sold approximately 64,000 utes in Australia, making it one of the top-selling vehicles in the market. Additionally, tens of thousands of Ford Rangers were sold in 2022.
Further details on the BYD electric ute are expected to be released by the end of the year.
