【Summary】The expansion of Sadiq Khan's Ulez scheme to the boundaries of the M25 means cars that don't meet emissions requirements will be charged £12.50 per day inside the zone. One in five Londoners plans to sell their cars to avoid the charge. To determine if it's worth selling and buying a new car, a calculator by The Telegraph helps calculate the time it would take to recoup the investment with savings on Ulez fines.

Calculate the Ulez payment or get a new vehicle

Sadiq Khan's Ulez scheme has recently expanded its boundaries from inner London to include the entire M25 area.

Under this scheme, cars that do not meet the emissions requirements will be charged a fee of £12.50 for each day they drive within the designated zone.

According to used car platform Motorway, approximately one in five Londoners are considering selling their cars to avoid paying these charges.

For those who are unsure whether to sell their car and upgrade to a vehicle that is exempt from emissions penalties, the key consideration is whether they drive enough to justify the investment.

As an example, a driver using an old diesel car for the daily school run within the Ulez zone would incur a weekly cost of £62.50, amounting to an annual expense of £2,000 based on the standard 39-week school year.

However, the question remains as to how long it would take to recover the initial investment by saving on Ulez fines after purchasing a newer car, let's say for £10,000.

To help answer this question, The Telegraph has developed a calculator that allows users to input their car model, desired selling price, the cost of the new car, and how frequently they drive into the Ulez zone each day.
