Electric Kayak: A Water-Equivalent of an E-Bike
【Summary】Old Town has developed an electric kayak, the Sportsman BigWater ePDL + 132, which operates similarly to an e-bike. It features a pedal-assist system, allowing users to venture further into the water. The kayak is equipped with a backlit LCD screen, push-button controls, and a lithium battery pack that offers a range of three to 46 hours. It is 13 feet long, weighs 122 pounds, and can carry up to 500 pounds. The kayak is priced at $5,999.
Active mobility has been on the rise in urban areas worldwide, with e-bikes and e-scooters becoming increasingly popular. However, the pedal assist technology found in electric bicycles is now paving the way for a new type of recreational vehicle that goes beyond land transportation.
Enter the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL + 132, an electric vehicle that may have a long name but is actually quite simple in design. This motorized kayak operates similarly to an e-bike, except it doesn't have wheels and is meant for water travel. It features a propulsion system powered by pedals, making it an aquatic e-bike of sorts.
The Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL + 132 is based on the non-electric Sportsman BigWater PDL kayak, so it's not an entirely new concept. However, the addition of the electric assist feature makes it much more versatile than a standard kayak, allowing users to venture further into the water. Like most e-bikes, this kayak can also be manually pedaled without the motor or even propelled with oars.
In terms of technology, the Sportsman BigWater ePDL + 132 is impressively equipped. It boasts a backlit LCD screen and push-button controls to select from five levels of pedal assistance. Additionally, it offers five cruise control speed presets, making it easy to set and go. The kayak is powered by a 36-volt 20-ampere-hour lithium battery pack, which provides a range of three hours at level five and an impressive 46 hours at level one, depending on factors like current, wind, and pedaling speed.
Measuring 13 feet and two inches in length and 35 inches in width, this kayak is convenient to transport, weighing in at 122 pounds. With a maximum load capacity of 500 pounds, it can accommodate two adults or one person with ample fishing equipment. The kayak also includes rod holders, cup holders, and a sealed cargo compartment at the front. As for the price, it comes in at $5,999.99 USD. Pre-orders are now available, and shipping is expected to commence in early 2024.
