Ford has introduced the all-new Transit Custom Nugget campervan, which is built on an updated chassis with a sophisticated independent rear suspension system. This system not only provides a more car-like driving experience but also offers the option of all-wheel drive, making it suitable for off-road conditions. The campervan shares its dash with the new Transit Custom van, featuring Ford's new 13-inch SYNC 4 infotainment system and the latest driver assistance technology, including active cruise control and a 360-degree camera system.
In addition to the diesel version, Ford will also offer the Nugget with a plug-in hybrid system. This hybrid model combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and 11.8kWh battery pack. The power unit produces a total of 228bhp, although the final efficiency, all-electric range, and performance figures are yet to be confirmed.
The Nugget campervan, equipped with Ford's EcoBlue diesel engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, will be available for delivery in Spring 2024. The engine produces 168bhp and can be paired with either front or all-wheel drive.
The Transit Custom Nugget campervan is a result of collaboration between Ford and German campervan specialist Westfalia. It features a new interior layout designed by Westfalia to meet the needs of customers based on their decades of experience. The central space in the cabin is modular and serves as a cooking, seating, and sleeping area. It allows for the setup of double beds while still providing room to move around.
The kitchen in the campervan has a new L-shaped layout and includes an integrated drawer fridge, induction hob, and sink with a hot water connection. This layout offers 20% more worktop space, and the cabinets now have damped closing mechanisms to reduce rattling during travel.
The campervan has several convenient features, including front seats that can rotate 180 degrees when parked and a three-wide second row that allows for a total of five passengers to travel. The tilting Dormer roof has a self-folding fabric section and the ability to flip up the end piece of the mattress to increase headroom above the kitchen area. There is also an optional solar roof that charges the on-board battery and provides off-grid electricity.
To keep campers connected, the Nugget offers various hi-tech connectivity features, such as a 5G modem for remote WiFi. It also includes a seven-inch touchscreen to control the on-board mood lighting, cabin heating, water, and battery levels.
Pricing and specifications for the Nugget campervan have yet to be confirmed, but it will be available to order from Ford showrooms in Autumn of this year, with deliveries starting in Spring 2024. Plug-in hybrid models will be introduced in the following year.
While the Nugget is an exciting new camper, Volkswagen is also introducing the upcoming Volkswagen California. Stay tuned for more information!
