Functional Supercar: Lamborghini CTO's Perspective

During the 2023 Quail show at Monterey Car Week, Lamborghini unveiled its daring Lanzador concept. This unique vehicle combines the ride height of the Urus with the profile of the Huracán, and features all-electric, four-motor hybrid technology inspired by the Revuelto. The Lanzador would certainly stand out in the EV market and make a distinctive addition to Lamborghini's hypercar lineup.

In an interview with Lamborghini's chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, we discussed the creation of the Lanzador and the challenge of maintaining Lamborghini's identity as the brand goes electric.

When asked about the inspiration behind the Lanzador concept, Mohr emphasized that it came from the super-sports car category. The goal was to create a car that provides the same exhilarating experience as a sports car but with added usability. The Lanzador is designed as a GT 2+2, offering ample room in the second row and a spacious tailgate for loading items like mountain bikes. Mohr believes this combination of supercar aesthetics and practicality fills a unique niche in the market.

Discussing the electrification of Lamborghini, Mohr made it clear that the brand will not compromise on performance. They have been working for two years to define the electric driving experience of a Lamborghini, exploring opportunities that are only possible with electric drivetrains. Mohr emphasized that Lamborghini will develop their own functionalities to create an emotional connection with the driver, setting their electric cars apart from others on the market.

Mohr explained that one example of the emotional component in an electric car is the shape of acceleration. Lamborghini aims to create a more dynamic and engaging acceleration experience, rather than a linear one. They also want to incorporate feedback that mimics the feeling of a combustion car, such as the slight movement when going off-throttle. The goal is to provide a natural and credible driving experience, without the feeling of driving a "fake" car.

While Audi's electrification efforts are related to Lamborghini as part of the same group, Mohr emphasized the need for Lamborghini to find its own path and maintain its distinct brand positioning. Lamborghini's electric cars will always have that extra "wow" factor that sets them apart.
