General Motors (GM) is planning to eliminate approximately 200 engineering positions, but the affected employees will have the opportunity to transition to other roles within the company. In an official statement, a spokesperson for GM explained that this move is part of their efforts to rebalance their engineering resources in line with their growth strategy. Over the next few months, a small number of engineers will be required to move to different departments, and GM will assist those affected by providing them with the chance to apply for available positions.
During GM's second-quarter earnings call in July, CEO Mary Barra revealed the company's new strategy called "Winning with Simplicity." This strategy aims to reduce design and engineering costs, as well as simplify vehicle orders and manufacturing processes. As part of this initiative, GM plans to cut the number of trim levels in half. By doing so, they hope to streamline marketing, engineering, and manufacturing operations, while still offering customers the best features they desire.
