Jaguar's upcoming electric sedan signals new era

Jaguar is preparing to lead its all-electric future with a £100,000 four-door GT. Our exclusive image provides a clear indication of what to expect from this exciting vehicle. The rear image showcases a departure from the design direction seen on Jaguar's current line-up, featuring distinct squared-off angles and a wide stance. Based on clues provided by Jaguar, our artist's impressions suggest that the GT will combine these design elements with solid surfacing and advanced aerodynamic treatment, including a prominent diffuser to enhance range. The razor-thin tail-lights further contribute to the overall aesthetic.

Newly appointed JLR boss Adrian Mardell expressed a desire to take Jaguar in a fresh direction with a new visual identity that captures the brand's emotion. Jaguar's team of designers presented various design options to key stakeholders, and the image we see here represents the first interpretation of a new design language that was unanimously chosen and described by Mardell as "jaw-dropping."

The rapid development process, known as Project Renaissance, was initiated by JLR's Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern. Three teams within JLR's design studio were given a common brief to create a family of three distinct vehicle types. In just three months, they produced 18 clay-model proposals. It is expected that several prototypes of the new GT will be tested on the road by the end of the year, with an official unveiling planned for April or May 2024 and sales scheduled for 2025.

This new GT design also provides insight into the future of Jaguar's upcoming crossovers. Mardell emphasizes the importance of maintaining a family look across the lineup. As part of JLR's Reimagine strategy, Jaguar is being fully rebooted and positioned alongside Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as one of the four brand pillars of JLR. The GT, along with the other two cars in the lineup, will be manufactured at the Solihull plant, which will also produce the all-electric Range Rover.

The GT is set to become the most powerful Jaguar production car ever made, surpassing the brand's existing EV, the I-Pace, in terms of both range and charging capacity. Although specific motor outputs and performance figures have not been released, Jaguar claims that the new model will have a range of up to 700km (435 miles) and be capable of adding approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of rapid charging.
