JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) has announced plans to introduce a new fleet of bio-fuelled lorries across the UK in April 2024. The goal is to significantly reduce the company's carbon emissions from road freight.
The new fleet will consist of 220 more sustainable HGVs, with 219 running on biofuels and one being battery-electric. JLR estimates that this switch will result in a remarkable 84% reduction in its road-freight CO2 output, amounting to a reduction of 8433 tonnes.
The bio-fuelled HGVs will utilize a combination of bio-CNG (compressed natural gas) and hydrotreated vegetable oil. This combination is expected to bring a minimum CO2 saving of 85% per lorry. Additionally, hydrotreated vegetable oil will be used to reduce the emissions of existing lorries.
In addition to the transition to new fuels, JLR will also be making a switch to using 15.6-metre lorries. This change is aimed at further improving the efficiency and sustainability of their road freight operations.
