Lamborghini Urus hybrid surpasses Ferrari Purosangue in power

Electrification is becoming increasingly popular in the car industry, and Lamborghini is no exception. In response to the demand for hybrid power, the company is planning to introduce new hybrid models, ensuring that hybrid engines will be available across their entire range, including the Urus SUV, by 2024.

Recent spy shots reveal that development is well underway for a new plug-in hybrid Urus. This model is expected to share its powertrain with the recently updated Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. When it is launched next year, the Urus PHEV is predicted to offer around 730bhp, making it one of the most powerful SUVs on the market.

Confirmation that this prototype is indeed an electrified model can be seen from the high-voltage sticker on its side. Despite the camouflage, there don't seem to be many significant design changes compared to the current Urus. However, if you look closely, you can spot new y-shaped horizontal grille slats and slimmer headlights.

To surpass the power and efficiency of the current 657bhp Urus Performante, the PHEV will utilize the 4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain from Porsche's Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. With the addition of a 174bhp electric motor, the Cayenne achieves a combined output of 729bhp and 701lb ft of torque. We can expect the Urus hybrid to at least match these figures.

This would position the Urus hybrid ahead of competitors such as the Range Rover Sport SV (626bhp), Aston Martin DBX707 (697bhp), and even the 715bhp Ferrari Purosangue. Additionally, the Lamborghini should be able to match or even exceed the Cayenne's impressive 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds and top speed of 190mph.

The new Turbo E-Hybrid from Porsche can travel up to 45 miles on pure electric power thanks to its 25.9kWh battery, which is located under the boot floor. The Urus PHEV is expected to have a similar electric range. However, due to the electric hardware, the Turbo E-Hybrid weighs an additional 405kg compared to the pure-petrol Cayenne S. This means we could be looking at a Lamborghini that weighs around 2.5 tons when the covers come off.
