Mercedes-Benz X-Class recall in Australia: Axle oil leak

Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia has issued a recall for over 6000 units of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute due to a rear axle oil leak. The leaked lubricant poses a potential risk of reducing the vehicle's braking performance.

The recall applies to all X-Class models sold in Australia between early-2018 and May 2020, covering the entire duration of the vehicle's availability in local showrooms. However, the Nissan Navara twin of the X-Class is not affected by this recall.

The recall notice, which has been submitted to the Department of Infrastructure, states that the rear axle radial shaft ring may not be adequately sealed due to a manufacturing defect. This could result in an oil leak, leading to an unexpected reduction in braking performance.

Such a decrease in braking performance could increase the likelihood of accidents, potentially causing harm or even death to vehicle occupants and other road users.

A comprehensive list of vehicle identification numbers for the 6117 affected vehicles can be found here.

Mercedes-Benz has advised X-Class owners to promptly contact their authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership to schedule the necessary repairs, which will be provided free of charge.

Alternatively, owners can seek more information by contacting Mercedes-Benz's customer assistance center via phone at 1300 300 896 or by email at [email protected].
