New Title: Ex-Top Gear Co-Host Test Drives the Latest Mercedes CLE, Is It an Affordable GT?

The Mercedes-Benz CLE, a new addition to the German car firm's lineup, was created in response to customer demands for more space and sportier driving dynamics. It replaces the two-door versions of the old C-Class and E-Class, positioning itself between the C- and E-Class models in terms of size. Competing with the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, the CLE combines design elements from both models, showcasing the typical three-pointed star brand aesthetic.

Inside, the CLE features a familiar layout with a touchscreen infotainment screen in the center, tablet-like digital dials, and comfortable front seats. The vehicle is equipped with various tech features, including TikTok and Angry Birds, and is illuminated by ambient lighting at night.

Power options for the Mercedes CLE vary depending on the market, with gasoline and diesel units available. All models come with mild-hybrid technology for an extra electric boost. The manual transmission option has been removed, leaving only the nine-speed automatic gearbox. While not the most responsive, the auto 'box performs well, especially when paired with the paddle shifters on faster models.

For those seeking more power, a six-cylinder engine is still available. This 3.0-liter unit features turbocharging and mild hybridization, producing 375 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes claims a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds, making it comparable to an entry-level Porsche. The top speed is limited to 155 mph in this configuration, known as the CLE 450.

AutoTrader reviewer Rory Reid had the opportunity to test the Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe in the 450 configuration. Reid, known for his time on Top Gear, shared his thoughts on the build quality, gadgets, design, practicality, and other aspects of this two-door machine. To discover his verdict and whether he recommends the CLE Coupe as a budget grand tourer or a posh sports ride, watch the video below.
