Nikola recalls delivered trucks for fire risk
【Summary】Nikola is recalling all 209 of its battery-powered electric trucks due to a fire risk caused by a coolant leak in the battery pack. Sales have been suspended while the company investigates the issue. No injuries have been reported, and foul play is unlikely to be the cause. Efforts are underway to find a remedy for the issue.
Nikola Corp. announced on Friday that it is recalling all of its battery-powered electric trucks and suspending sales after an investigation determined that a coolant leak inside the battery pack caused recent fires.
A spokesperson for Nikola stated that there are a total of 209 battery-powered electric trucks in the marketplace, including those with dealers and customers. The company is currently recalling these vehicles and is in the process of contacting all parties involved, according to Reuters.
The findings of the investigation were supported by a "minor thermal incident" on one pack of a parked engineering-validation truck, which occurred on Thursday. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Nikola stated that foul play or external factors were unlikely to have caused the incident. The company is now working on providing a solution to the issue.
In June, when trucks at Nikola's headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona caught fire, the company initially suspected foul play and launched an investigation. Last month, one of the damaged trucks at the Phoenix site re-ignited, further prompting the investigation.
