This is a unique and exciting concept that Mazda recently unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show. Instead of introducing a new version of the Miata, Mazda surprised everyone with the Iconic SP, a stunning tribute to the third-generation FD RX-7.

The design of the Iconic SP pays homage to the RX-7 lineage, with its curvaceous body reminiscent of the FD model. It features iconic 90s automotive design elements like pop-up headlights and circular taillights, while also incorporating modern touches such as Mazda's signature grille and retractable angular headlights. The dimensions of the Iconic SP strike a balance between the compactness of the RX-8 and the presence of the Miata.

Inside the car, minimalism is the key. Inspired by the ethos of the FD RX-7, the cabin is designed to be driver-focused. The dash is simple, with only the driver's instrument binnacle and a strategically placed infotainment screen. The center console, with its switches, emulates a gated shifter found in high-end sports cars today.

Under the hood, Mazda has introduced a twin-rotor hybrid powertrain for the Iconic SP. While the company has not confirmed whether it will be a plug-in hybrid, they have emphasized the engine's scalability and its potential to operate on hydrogen, "carbon-neutral" fuels, and gasoline. The combined output of the powertrain is an impressive 364 horsepower, but Mazda has not provided specific details about the distribution of power between the engine and electric components, or the drivetrain details. However, given Mazda's history, it is likely that the Iconic SP will have a rear-wheel-drive system. The vehicle weighs 3,197 pounds and has a perfectly balanced weight distribution between the front and rear.

The Iconic SP is a true marvel of design and innovation. While Mazda's rotary engine comeback with the MX-30 is currently limited to Europe, it is uncertain whether the Iconic SP's powertrain will be available in the global market, especially in the U.S. As captivating as the Iconic SP is, it remains to be seen whether it will transition from concept to production. Car enthusiasts can only hope, albeit cautiously, to see this masterpiece on the roads in the near future.
