Skoda Kodiaq: Unveiling the Ultimate Family Car

Skoda is facing the challenge of creating a new generation of its Kodiaq SUV that surpasses its predecessor in terms of quality and maintains its reputation as a practical and family-friendly car manufacturer. The new Kodiaq promises to be more spacious, luxurious, and technologically advanced, while still staying true to Skoda's core values. CAR had an exclusive preview of the new SUV in the UK market.

The design of the new Kodiaq still resembles its predecessor, but with some stylish updates. The high-end model features aerodynamic wheel inserts, a contrast-color D-pillar, and a thin light bar integrated into the grille. Skoda introduces a new color called Bronx Bronze for the Kodiaq. The head of exterior design, Karl Neuhold, explains that the goal was to create a sculptural design that emphasizes the car's functionality and showcases it as a true seven-seater. The rear lights are connected by a single piece of transparent red trim, and the trimmings have a titanium-like appearance instead of chrome for a more sustainable approach.

In terms of the interior, Skoda focused on ergonomics and user-friendliness. The new Kodiaq features physical switchgear, including Smart Dials that control various functions such as temperature and seat heating or cooling. The dashboard has a sculptured design and includes digital instruments and a large 13-inch display running on VW Group's latest infotainment software. Skoda offers three interior trim designs, including fabric seats, suede-like microfiber cloth with yellow stitching, and treated and tanned leather using sustainable practices. The center console provides extra storage space, and optional features include a head-up display, massaging seats, and a parking assistant.

The new Kodiaq utilizes the MQBevo platform, which allows for maximum interior space. The rear legroom is spacious, and there are high-powered USB-C sockets. The five-seat model offers a large 910-liter boot space, while the seven-seat model provides 340 liters or 845 liters with the third row's seats folded up and down respectively. The Kodiaq iV plug-in hybrid variant has a luggage capacity of 745 liters.

The Kodiaq will be available with various powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, and an iV plug-in hybrid. The range starts with a 1.5 TSI EA211 Evo2 engine with mild-hybrid power, followed by a 2.0-liter TSI engine and a 187bhp diesel. Skoda also introduces its first electrified option for the Kodiaq with the plug-in hybrid variant, which offers 62 miles of electric range and supports DC fast charging.

The new Skoda Kodiaq is expected to go on sale in early 2024, with prices starting around £38,000.
