Stargazer X: A Futuristic Budget Crossover

Hyundai continues to expand its range of vehicles in order to meet the specific needs of customers in Asian markets. The latest addition to their lineup is the Hyundai Stargazer X, a new variant of their three-row minivan that features crossover-inspired aesthetics. This model is positioned as a competitor to the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross.

The Stargazer X was recently unveiled at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), exactly one year after the debut of the standard Stargazer model. While it maintains the single-box proportions and Staria-inspired full-width LEDs of its predecessor, the Stargazer X incorporates some adventurous design elements typically seen in crossovers and SUVs.

One notable change to the Stargazer X is the redesigned front end, which includes a sculpted bonnet, an expansive grille with a chrome pattern, and black trim around the split headlights with darker bezels. The profile of the vehicle is characterized by generous plastic cladding around the boxy wheel arches and side skirts, as well as bi-tone 17-inch wheels and roof rails. At the back, there is a spoiler extension and a redesigned bumper featuring a prominent skid plate surrounded by unpainted plastic.

Due to its SUV-inspired redesign, the Stargazer X has grown slightly in size compared to the standard model. It now measures 4,495 mm (177 inches) in length, 1,815 mm (71.5 inches) in width, and 1,710 mm (67.3 inches) in height. The ground clearance has also increased by 15 mm (0.6 inches) to a generous 200 mm (7.9 inches). However, it's important to note that the Stargazer X remains a front-wheel-drive vehicle and does not offer any off-road capabilities beyond the additional ground clearance and protective cladding.

Mechanically, the Stargazer X is identical to its standard counterpart. It is equipped with a non-electrified naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 113 hp (85 kW / 115 PS) and 144 Nm (106.2 lb-ft) of torque. The engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission, both of which send power to the front wheels.

Inside the Stargazer X, the three-row cabin can be configured as a 6-seater or 7-seater, depending on whether captain seats are chosen for the second row. The interior features an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 4.2-inch screen in the instrument cluster, ambient lighting, a Bose audio system, a few advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and faux leather upholstery with red stitching. In terms of practicality, the vehicle offers a hidden tray in the dashboard, illuminated cup holders, and pockets and foldable tables on the seatbacks. With all seats in place, the boot provides 200 liters (7.1 cubic feet) of cargo space, which expands to 585 liters (20.7 cubic feet) when the third row is folded.

The Hyundai Stargazer X is already available for purchase in Indonesia, with prices starting from Rp. 338,600,000 ($22,160). The standard Stargazer, which is available in more budget-friendly trims with reduced equipment compared to its crossover sibling, starts from as low as Rp. 259,600,000 ($16,990).
