Supercharged battery promises 249-mile range in just 10 minutes

Chinese battery company CATL has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) battery called Shenxing, which boasts a 400km (249 miles) driving range with just a 10-minute charge. The battery, made with lithium iron phosphate (LFP), is also claimed to have a range of over 700km (435 miles) on a single full charge. CATL, a major supplier to Tesla, Toyota, and VW, believes that the Shenxing battery will significantly reduce charging anxiety for EV users and usher in an era of superfast charging.

Shenxing utilizes super electronic network cathode technology and fully nano-crystallized LFP cathode material to create a super-electronic network. This network enables the efficient extraction of lithium ions and a rapid response to charging signals. The battery combines fast charging capabilities, high energy density, and a high level of safety, pushing innovation in the battery industry. Additionally, it can charge normally at low temperatures. At room temperature, Shenxing can reach an 80% state of charge in 10 minutes. Even in temperatures as low as -10°C, it can achieve a 0-80% charge in just 30 minutes and maintain uncompromised acceleration performance.

Dr. Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, emphasized the importance of advanced technology being accessible to all EV consumers. As the industry progresses, the goal should be to make innovative technology available to everyone. Mass production of the Shenxing battery is expected to begin by the end of 2023, and electric vehicles equipped with this battery will hit the market in the first quarter of next year.

In related news, Toyota recently announced its own advancements in EV and battery technology. The company's plans include the development of long-range battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and all-solid-state batteries. All-solid-state batteries are highly sought after due to their potential for cost-effective, fast, and safe charging. Toyota's battery technology has the potential to provide a range of approximately 1,200km (746 miles) and a quick charge time of 10 minutes or less. Further improvements could increase the cruising range by 50% to 1,500km (932 miles). Toyota is currently working on mass production methods and aims to commercialize its technology by 2027/2028.
