Volkswagen has officially begun production of its ID.7 electric saloon in preparation for its launch in Europe later this year. The news was announced through a social media post, marking the "symbolic start of production" at the Emden plant in Germany. This comes after a small production run in June.

Thomas Shafer, CEO of Volkswagen passenger cars, expressed his appreciation for the team at the Emden plant, saying, "The ID.7 is a top car from a top team. A big compliment to all our colleagues in Emden who have been so active in making the start of production a full success. Thanks everyone for your commitment!"

The ID.7, introduced earlier this year, is positioned as a "comfortable limousine for long distance travel," establishing a new segment within the ID family and indirectly replacing the Passat and Arteon models. It boasts features such as long ranges, fast charging, a spacious interior, and intuitive operation.

As a competitor to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, the ID.7 offers a range of up to 435 miles and supports charging rates of up to 200kW. Two variants will be available: the entry-level ID.7 Pro model with a 77kWh battery providing up to 382 miles of range, and the Pro S derivative with an 82kWh pack for the headline 435-mile range. Both models feature a rear-mounted 286hp single motor, which is the most powerful and highest-torque electric drive motor in any Volkswagen ID. model to date. A dual-motor four-wheel drive option will be released later.

The Emden plant is exclusively producing the ID.7 for the European and North American markets. The site has undergone more than one billion euros of investment since 2019 to enable e-mobility production.

In addition to the ID.7, Volkswagen plans to launch 10 new electric models between 2023 and 2026. This includes the recently launched ID.3 and long-wheelbase ID. Buzz, as well as a compact electric SUV in 2026 and the production version of the ID.2, which will be priced below €25k (around £22k). Volkswagen aims to offer the widest range of electric vehicles compared to its competitors and has set a target of achieving an 80% electric car share in Europe by 2030, with plans to produce only electric vehicles in Europe by 2033.
