Tata's EV sales see 24% contribution from women
【Summary】Tata Motors sells 24% of its electric vehicles to women in India due to factors such as ease of driving, safety, and improved charging infrastructure. Electric vehicles are now seen as the primary choice for many customers. Kerala and Maharashtra are leading states in EV adoption. Tata Motors has seen significant growth in EV sales, with projections of selling 50,000 units in the next 5-6 months. The company plans to add six more EV models by 2025.
Women play a significant role in the Indian electric car market, accounting for almost 24 percent of the electric vehicles sold by Tata Motors. Vivek Srivatsa, Head-Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, attributes this trend to several factors such as the ease of driving, safety features, and the increasing availability of charging infrastructure.
In the past, electric vehicles were often seen as a secondary choice when purchasing a car. However, Srivatsa notes that the majority of customers now consider electric vehicles as their primary choice. This shift in perception has contributed to the growing adoption of electric vehicles, particularly in states like Kerala and Maharashtra.
Srivatsa recently attended a women's car rally in Kochi and expressed his admiration for customers who have readily embraced change. He highlights the remarkable growth in sales of Tata EVs over the past few years, with sales figures increasing significantly. In FY20, Tata Motors sold approximately 1,200 EVs, followed by around 4,200 units in FY21, and approximately 19,000 units in FY22. Last year, they achieved a milestone by selling 50,000 units, representing a remarkable growth rate of 154 percent over FY22.
Highlighting the company's success, Srivatsa reveals that Tata Motors recently surpassed the milestone of selling one lakh EVs in the country. It took 44 months to sell the first 10,000 units since the launch of the first product in 2017. However, the subsequent sales of 10,000-50,000 units only took 15 months, and the next 50,000 units were sold in just nine months. With such rapid growth, Srivatsa expects the next 50,000 sales to occur within 5-6 months.
Looking ahead, Tata Motors plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup. The company aims to introduce six more EV products by 2025, bringing the total number of variants to 10. In Q1 FY24, Tata Motors achieved its highest-ever quarterly sales of 19,346 vehicles, representing a 105 percent increase compared to Q1 FY23. Srivatsa attributes this success to the strong market response to the Tiago EV, while demand for other EVs remained consistent.
Finally, Srivatsa commends the charging infrastructure in Kerala, stating that it is among the best in the country. This robust infrastructure contributes to the convenience and accessibility of electric vehicles in the state.
