Toyota EPU truck vs Ford Maverick hybrid
【Summary】Toyota has unveiled the EPU electric truck concept, which is similar in size to the Ford Maverick hybrid pickup. The EPU has space for five people and features a versatile deck space for cargo. It is expected to have a five-foot long cargo bed and rides on a longer wheelbase compared to the Maverick. The EPU offers a quiet and stable ride, thanks to its electric propulsion and low center of gravity. The interior of the EPU appears production-ready, with a utilitarian design.
Toyota has unveiled a concept for a fully electric compact pickup truck, which is about the same size as the Ford Maverick hybrid pickup. The Toyota EPU concept will be showcased at the Tokyo auto show this week. It is approximately 200 inches long, making it comparable in length to the Maverick. The EPU concept can accommodate up to five people and features a versatile deck space that can be used for carrying longer cargo or opening up the cabin to the bed.
While Toyota has not provided specific details about the cargo bed, based on the overall length and proportions of the truck, it is estimated to be around five feet long. The EPU has a wheelbase of 131.9 inches, which is 10 inches longer than that of the Maverick. Its width and height, at 75 inches and 67 inches respectively, are similar to the Maverick.
Toyota highlights the benefits of electric propulsion, including quietness and a low center of gravity, which contribute to good stability and ride comfort. Similar to the Maverick, the EPU features a unibody layout instead of a body-on-frame setup used in other Toyota pickups. This suggests the possibility of a skateboard platform and potential additional storage space under the hoodline.
Although no details about the EPU's interior have been disclosed, it is the only concept among those bound for Tokyo that appears to have a production-ready cabin. The dashboard has a utilitarian design with tray storage and a less upright look compared to current gasoline trucks like the Tacoma.
In April 2021, Toyota confirmed plans for an electric pickup truck to be available in the United States in the near future. Recently, the company announced an extended fleet test of the Toyota HiLux Revo BEV Concept, which features a cost-conscious battery pack and propulsion system offering a range of up to 143 miles and 0-60 mph acceleration in about 10 seconds. However, it is expected that a production truck based on the EPU would have significantly better range and performance.
