Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid engines

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a more robust chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option for a hybrid powertrain. In terms of aesthetics, Toyota has moved away from the previous generation's awkward and angular design, opting for a sleek retro look inspired by the brand's 80s and 90s 60- and 80-series models.

Despite these updates, the fundamental formula of the Land Cruiser remains unchanged. The vehicle still features a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% sturdier and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the Land Cruiser's enduring ruggedness.

The updated Land Cruiser shares the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, although the latter is not available for purchase in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, power for the Land Cruiser comes from a 2.8-liter diesel engine that delivers 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, which is expected to enhance fuel efficiency in low-speed and stop-start driving scenarios.

Both engine variants will be paired with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which promises smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speed transmission. It remains unclear whether a manual option will be available.

The off-road capabilities of the Land Cruiser have also been improved. The vehicle now features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. This bar can be operated using a switch on the dashboard, resulting in a higher-quality ride and improved handling on rough terrain.

Toyota has also made changes to the Land Cruiser's steering system, transitioning from hydraulic to electric power steering. According to Toyota, this switch reduces kickback and enhances maneuverability at all speeds.

Considering the Land Cruiser's intended use for challenging off-road driving, the body panels have been developed to allow for easy repair or replacement. This is especially true for the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside the vehicle, buyers can expect a durable interior equipped with a central screen and a series of robust buttons that can be operated even with gloved fingers. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser are set to begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Additionally, there will be a limited First Edition model, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
