Train of Dacia Sanderos replaces HS2
【Summary】The HS2 rail link between London and Birmingham is being scrapped and replaced with a train of Dacia Sanderos to save money. Although the Sandero train won't reach the speeds promised by HS2, it will have exclusive use of the hard shoulder on the M1 and M6. The move is expected to free up funds for the Phase 2 leg to Manchester. Despite the reduced journey times, transport chiefs believe this alternative will solve multiple problems.
The government has announced that the entirety of the HS2 rail link between London and Birmingham will be scrapped and replaced with a train of Dacia Sanderos welded together. This decision is expected to significantly reduce the cost of the project, potentially freeing up funds for the under-threat Phase 2 leg to Manchester. Although the Sandero train will not be able to reach the high speeds initially promised by HS2, passengers will have the advantage of exclusive use of the hard shoulder along the M1 and M6, allowing them to mock the frustrated drivers stuck in traffic.
Transport chiefs believe that this unconventional solution will help divert attention from the unfulfilled promise of a 52-minute journey time between the UK's two largest cities. One insider stated that replacing HS2 with a train of Sanderos solves all their problems, as it will be completed under budget, avoid the need to destroy green belt land, and require less maintenance compared to a state-of-the-art train carriage. However, there will be no food or drinks service on the Sandero train, but considering the affordability of the ticket, passengers may not be able to afford extras anyway.
When asked about the possibility of proceeding with the leg to Manchester, the insider expressed uncertainty due to the need to fix numerous potholes in the north. They also mentioned the cost of a spare wheel for a Sandero, which is currently priced at £300, prompting a cost analysis to determine the most economical option.
