Last year, Elon Musk of Tesla made headlines when he claimed that the Cybertruck would be able to function as a boat. However, Chinese automaker BYD has now introduced an electric SUV that can actually do just that.

The latest model from BYD is called the YangWang U8, a luxurious off-roader aimed at competing with vehicles like the Range Rover and the Mercedes G-Wagen. What sets it apart is its electric powertrain, and specifically, its Yachting Mode.

According to CarScoops, the Yachting Mode involves sealing the doors, switching the A/C to recirculation, and opening the sunroof to provide passengers with an easy escape route in case of emergencies. Once these settings are confirmed, the 7,000 lb SUV can float on water for up to 30 minutes.

But the BYD YangWang SUV doesn't just float aimlessly. It is equipped with four operable wheels that can propel the vehicle at a speed of up to 1.8 mph.

If sailing isn't your thing, the YangWang U8 is also capable of maneuvering through shallower waters. The Off-road Edition can wade up to 55 inches, surpassing the capabilities of the new Defender.

To engage the snorkel and enable the vehicle to navigate through water, the YangWang U8 relies on a two-liter turbocharged engine, which serves as a range extender.

The onboard engine can recharge the car's batteries at a rate of 49.05 kWh. With a full charge and a full tank, the U8 has a range of up to 621 miles before needing to stop again.
