The new BMW M2 has proven itself to be a fast contender on the track, setting a record around the Nürburgring in the compact class segment. With a time of 7:38.706, it surpassed the Audi RS3 and the previous M2 model. While it may not be an all-out track record, it is still an impressive feat.

BMW shared a video of the complete lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the classic road course where the record was achieved. This time not only puts the new M2 ahead of its competitors, but also surpasses the previous M2 model. The old F87 M2 Competition, which was not even the standard model, had a time of 7:52.36. However, BMW still has some ground to cover to beat the previous record set by Audi. In 2021, an RS3 in the same class ran a time of 7:40.748, a difference that is practically within the margin of error on the 'Ring.

What sets BMW's record apart is that the M2 used for the record was fitted with parts that are available to regular customers. In contrast, the Audi used for its record run had modifications such as a full cage, rear seat delete, and racing buckets. Despite this, it is possible that Audi could come back with a special-edition RS3 and reclaim the title. While this competition may seem meaningless to some, it could lead to significant investments by both manufacturers.

Although the new M2 has an impressive record, it is not quite the same as its first-generation counterpart. The current "compact" 2 Series is more like a shortened 4 Series, resulting in a weight of nearly 4,000 pounds. However, it makes up for this with its powerful six-cylinder engine producing 453 horsepower and the option for a manual transmission. Additionally, it is one of the few remaining manual, rear-wheel drive coupes in today's market. Considering all these factors, the new M2 is still a worthwhile purchase, especially considering its price point that is approximately $15,000 lower than the M4.
