Baffling Road Markings in Devon Town: Locals Concerned

Locals and holidaymakers in the popular seaside town of Paignton in South Devon have been left puzzled by the appearance of new road markings. The red, white, and blue painted color scheme, which spans a junction with two one-way systems, has caused confusion among pedestrians and motorists alike. While Torbay Council claims that the new color scheme is intended to improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, some residents have compared the markings to a swimming pool or a leftover decoration from King Charles's Coronation.

Roy and Jackie Apps, long-time residents of Paignton, expressed their confusion and frustration with the markings. Roy questioned the need for such a colorful road and suggested that a traditional black tarmac with a white circle would have sufficed. Jackie proposed making the area one-way down to the seafront to simplify the road layout. Both residents expressed concerns about the potential for accidents, particularly among tourists who may not be paying close attention while walking.

Motorists have also struggled to navigate the new junction, with some even having to reverse after making wrong turns. Torquay resident Simon Singleton jokingly compared the markings to a swimming pool and questioned the need for more confusion on the roads. Fran Jerett, a teenager who works at a sweet shop near the junction, found the markings unusual and believed they were unnecessary modernization in a town that has retained its charm over the years.

However, not everyone has been critical of the bold color scheme. Some holidaymakers have praised the markings for brightening up the area and sparking conversations. Cathleen Green from Birmingham found the markings unique and thought-provoking, while Denis Nelson from Sheffield appreciated their eye-catching nature and suggested they could become a local landmark.

The new road markings are part of ongoing changes to Paignton Road. The road was initially pedestrianized in September 2022 but was reopened to traffic this month following protests from local traders. Torbay Council explained that the contrasting colors of the markings are meant to provide clarity and improve safety for road users and pedestrians. The red is intended to remind motorists to slow down and think before turning at the junction, while the blue is meant to define the pedestrian area and align with the town's placemaking goals.
