Cadillac Optiq Challenges Tesla Model Y with Dual-Motor AWD Version in China

A new listing has appeared, revealing the dual-motor AWD version of the electric Cadillac SUV, the Optiq. This comes a month after the single-motor FWD Cadillac Optiq was unveiled in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The new Optiq will be positioned below the larger Lyriq and will compete with the Tesla Model Y, making it one of Cadillac's most important new models.

Visually, the flagship AWD trim of the Cadillac Optiq is identical to its high-spec FWD counterpart, featuring the same glossy black accents and 20-inch alloy wheels. The only distinguishing factor is the badges on the tailgate that indicate the powertrain variant. However, there is a blue-painted example that showcases a slightly different grille pattern.

The AWD model retains the same dimensions as the 2WD Optiq, measuring 4,822 mm (189.8 inches) in length, 1,912 mm (75.3 inches) in width, and having a wheelbase of 2,954 mm (116.3 inches). The only difference is the listed height, which is 1 mm higher than the FWD Optiq. Additionally, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain adds an extra 82 kg (181 lbs) to the curb weight, resulting in a total weight of 2,300 kg (5,071 lbs) compared to the 2,220 kg (4,890 lbs) of the FWD model.

The electric powertrain of the AWD Optiq consists of a front-mounted electric motor producing 192 hp (143 kW / 194 PS) and a rear-mounted electric motor producing 91 hp (68 kW / 92 PS). While the combined output is not mentioned, it is expected to match the power levels of the mechanically-related AWD Buick Electra E5, which offers 283 hp (211 kW / 287 PS) and 343 lb-ft (465 Nm) of torque. In comparison, the single-motor FWD Optiq provides either 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) or 241 hp (180 kW / 245 PS).

Despite the increased power, the top speed of the AWD Optiq remains limited to 180 km/h (112 mph), but improvements in acceleration are expected. The electric motors will draw energy from a lithium-ion battery pack of unknown capacity, manufactured by SAIC. It is worth noting that the Buick Electra E5, which shares similarities with the Optiq, features a 79.7 kWh battery with a range of 375 miles (603 km), figures that could potentially be similar for the Cadillac SUV.

The Cadillac Optiq is scheduled to make its debut in China during the second half of 2023, with production commencing soon at the SAIC-GM plant in Wuhan. While it may initially seem like the Optiq will be exclusive to China, its resemblance to a camouflaged prototype spotted testing in the United States suggests that it could also be offered in North America. It has been officially confirmed that at least one of the three upcoming Cadillac EVs for 2023 will be produced in multiple locations.
