The VW ID.5 is currently the largest car in its pure electric range – at least until the VW ID.7 launches later this year. Unlike other car manufacturers, VW has chosen to keep its electric line separate, with all models sporting the ID. prefix. This allows for specific design and aerodynamics tailored to the electric platform, but it may not generate the same loyalty as electric versions of traditional cars.

The closest ICE model to the ID.5 is the T-Roc, a mid-sized SUV that joined the lineup in 2017. VW does not currently have electric equivalents of its larger Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, and the premium saloon equivalent to the Arteon (the ID.7) will be added later this year.

VW's ID.5 launched in 2022, with the sportier GTX version also available. The standard model starts at £50,710, while the GTX is priced slightly higher at £56,545. The ID.5 is not currently available in the US and is expected to come to Australia in 2024. Comparatively, the Tesla Model 3 offers similar pricing in standard and performance models but with better range and acceleration. Cheaper options include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, while the Audi Q4 e-tron is slightly more expensive.

The ID.5 has a distinctive hatchback design with SUV features. It is spacious enough for a family of four and features 20-inch alloys, black wheel arches, and large air intakes. The two-tone paintwork and choice of colors add to its appeal. The standard ID.5 offers rear-wheel drive and up to 204 mechanical horsepower, while the GTX features all-wheel drive and 299PS. In terms of economy and range, the GTX offers up to 314 miles from its 77kWh battery, while the standard ID.5 offers 327 miles.

The ID.5 is equipped with various tech features, including IQ.Light, a 12-inch center display, and a smaller display for vehicle dynamics. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as streaming services through the car's data connection. Driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and Park Assist Plus for automated parallel parking.

Driving the ID.5 is a pleasant experience, with enough power to feel responsive. It has a range of 300 miles and a max DC charge of 135kW. Overall, the VW ID.5 is a solid choice for current VW owners and those in need of a family-sized car. While it may not have any standout features, it offers logical and practical benefits.
