Monarch's debut at Highland games in fresh tartan
【Summary】King Charles III donned a new tartan for his first appearance as monarch at the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering. The King Charles III tartan, designed to mark his coronation, is green, blue, and red. The King attended the event with the Queen and handed trophies to winning competitors. The monarch becomes the chief of the gathering traditionally, although Charles has not been announced as such yet. The King frequently attended the games as the Prince of Wales.
During his visit to the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering, which is located near his summer residence at Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, King Charles III wore a new tartan. The tartan, called the King Charles III tartan, was specially designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority to commemorate the monarch's coronation. It features shades of green, blue, and red.
Accompanying His Majesty were the Queen, the Princess Royal, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. Throughout the event, King Charles III appeared to be in good spirits, frequently laughing and clapping while watching the games.
John McLeish, chair of the Scottish Tartans Authority, expressed his gratitude that the King agreed to have a new tartan created in his name. He described tartan as an iconic national cloth that evokes a strong sense of belonging and is beloved around the world. Mr. McLeish considered it an honor to witness His Majesty wearing the King Charles III tartan for the first time at the Braemar Gathering.
The Braemar Gathering is a significant event for the royal family. Although Charles has not yet been announced as the chief of the gathering, it is a tradition for the monarch to hold this position. This was the first time King Charles III attended the games as the reigning monarch, but he had previously attended numerous times as the Prince of Wales. In fact, a photograph taken at the games last year was used for one of the royal family's Christmas cards.
During the competition, King Charles III and the Queen were seen laughing together, clearly enjoying the games. The King also presented trophies to the winning competitors, who participated in various sports such as shot put and tug-of-war.
