MOT Checklist: Essential Information (2023)

The MOT test can cause anxiety for many car owners. It is estimated that one in 10 vehicles fail their first test, resulting in costly repair bills or even taking the car off the road permanently.

However, there is no need to worry excessively. By understanding how vehicles are tested, you can easily determine if your car is likely to pass or fail before going to the test center. This allows you to address any potential faults beforehand.

Numberplate

One commonly overlooked aspect is the car's numberplate. Ensuring that it is the correct color (usually black on yellow at the rear and black on white at the front), fully legible (without significant cracks, scrapes, or fading), and displaying the appropriate registration format for your car's year is essential for passing the test.

The DVSA also advises that the characters on the numberplate must be in the correct font, and the plate itself must be the appropriate size.

Lights and indicators

During the test, your car's headlights will be examined to ensure they are properly aimed, switch correctly between dipped beam and full beam, and have clear, unmarked lenses.

The indicators will also be tested for flashing bulbs. Any non-flashing bulbs will result in a failure.

The numberplate light, reversing lights, and fog lights will also undergo inspection.
