New EV Patent Reveals BYD's Upcoming Electric Truck
【Summary】BYD, a Chinese automaker and EV manufacturer, is set to release a new electric pickup truck by the end of 2023. The leaked patent reveals the design, which features the BYD nameplate and is part of the Ocean Series. The truck, designed by Wolfgang Egger, resembles the Toyota Tacoma but is slightly smaller. It will compete with Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV.
A new electric pickup truck is set to be released by the end of the year, according to a leaked patent. BYD, a battery maker turned EV manufacturer, is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of this new truck.
In September, BYD achieved another record by selling 151,193 fully electric vehicles. With this growth, BYD is now just a few thousand electric models away from surpassing Tesla as the top-selling EV maker. In the second quarter, Tesla delivered 435,059 EVs compared to BYD's 431,603.
BYD is finding success not only in China but also overseas. It currently leads in countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Columbia, and Israel. The company has also launched new models in Japan, Mexico, India, Australia, Hungary, and more, aiming to continue its success until the end of the year. Recently, BYD celebrated the production of its 500,000th Dolphin electric hatchback and Yuan Plus.
One of BYD's main advantages is affordability. While other automakers are incurring losses on each EV sold, BYD is making a profit. The company has achieved nearly full integration in the production of its Dolphin EV, with only the tires and windows being outsourced.
According to a leaked patent, BYD is planning to launch an electric truck by the end of the year. Although specific details about the truck have not been released, reports suggest that it will be part of BYD's Ocean Series. Designed by Wolfgang Egger, a former Audi designer now working for BYD, the truck will feature the prominent "BYD" logo on the front grille, four doors, and rugged fenders.
Previous sightings of the electric pickup truck during testing indicate that it bears a resemblance to the Toyota Tacoma. However, it is expected to be slightly shorter, measuring around 209" compared to the Tacoma's 225". The BYD electric pickup truck will be competing with Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV.
Inside the truck, a head-up display from Huawei has been spotted. It is likely that the electric truck will be available in both all-electric and plug-in hybrid variants. The anticipated launch date is by the end of the year.
As the popularity of pickup trucks grows in China, especially for outdoor activities, the introduction of electric options is becoming more prevalent. Other automakers, such as GM's joint venture SGMW and Geely's Radar, are already exporting electric trucks to overseas markets with features tailored for outdoor adventures.
More information about BYD's new electric pickup truck is expected to be revealed closer to the launch date. Stay tuned for updates.
