New Saveiro Bakkie Revealed by Volkswagen
【Summary】Volkswagen has unveiled its new Saveiro half-tonne bakkie, but it won't be available in South Africa due to development costs and low volumes. The Saveiro is offered in single-cab and double-cab configurations, with payload capacities ranging from 638 kg to 664 kg. The 2023 iteration features a redesigned front bumper, grille, headlights, and rear bumper. It is powered by a petrol 1.6-liter engine delivering 85 kW and 157 N.m of torque.
Volkswagen has unveiled the latest version of its half-tonne Saveiro bakkie, but unfortunately, it will not be available in South Africa. The company has confirmed that due to its left-hand driving orientation, developing a right-hand drive model would be too costly and not economically viable for the South African market.
The Saveiro is offered in both single-cab and double-cab configurations, with the single cab having a payload capacity of 664 kg and the double cab variant slightly lower at 638 kg. The range includes four models: Robust Single Cab, Robust Double Cab, Trendline Single Cab, and Extreme Double Cab.
The range-topping Extreme model stands out with its 15-inch alloy wheels in a Paino Black color, leather upholstery in Oliver Gray, a Composition Touch multimedia system, and various exterior elements that match its Extreme nameplate.
The 2023 iteration of the Saveiro features a redesigned front with a taller bonnet, marked lines leading to the front bumper, and a redesigned grille with chrome trim. The rear showcases darkened taillights connected by a horizontal matte black stripe, and the redesigned rear bumper improves the bakkie's departure angle. The Saveiro has dimensions of 4,474 mm in length, 1,521 mm in height, and 1,893 mm in width, with a wheelbase of 2,752 mm.
Under the hood, the Saveiro is powered by VW's petrol 1.6-liter naturally aspirated EA211 engine, delivering 85 kW and 157 N.m of torque to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The front suspension has been raised by 10 mm to enhance ground clearance.
With the discontinuation of Nissan's NP200, the Saveiro could be a strong contender in the half-tonne bakkie segment. However, it will not be available in South Africa.
