Ford is aware that camper vans offer a fun and liberating experience for those who are willing to explore beyond crossovers and SUVs. The automaker is preparing to launch what appears to be the 2024 Ford Transit Custom Nugget, an updated version of a popular van in the one-tonne segment.

In recent times, camper vans have gained popularity for two main reasons: remote work and the desire to travel extensively before potential movement restrictions are reinstated. These vehicles also allow drivers and passengers to reduce accommodation costs without sacrificing too many amenities. Additionally, there is the added advantage of enjoying Neil Young's "Down by the River" in peace, without disturbing others. By choosing the right spot, you can find solitude and not worry about neighbors.

Ford Pro CEO Ted Cannis shared a short video on X (formerly known as Twitter) that showcases the new vehicle in a lush forested environment. The video reveals an elevating pop-top roof, a person opening the tent's window, and a glimpse of what appears to be a comfortable bed. The camera then moves to someone using a shower head that doubles as a sink faucet, which is a useful feature for travelers who prefer unconventional resting places. Inside the vehicle, we see someone cutting vegetables on a kitchenette and the additional storage space on the liftgate, which can accommodate camping chairs or more.

So, how did we deduce that this teaser is for the 2024 Ford Transit Custom Nugget? It's quite simple. First, Ford's Ted Cannis mentioned "Get ready for an outdoor adventure!" Second, considering the timing, Ford introduced the 2022 Ford Transit Custom Nugget two years ago, with the official unveiling taking place in late August 2021. Two years prior, in 2019, Ford collaborated with Westfalia to develop a light commercial vehicle (LCV) for self-sufficient travelers.

Last year, Ford unveiled the 2023 Ford Transit Custom, featuring a new design and interesting powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid with a 2.5-liter gas-powered engine. It served as an alternative to the all-electric E-Transit Custom van.

The third clue comes from subtle coincidences. Earlier this month, Volkswagen provided a glimpse of its updated California camper van, confirming that the next generation would offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Ford and Volkswagen have entered into a partnership to share manufacturing capabilities and platforms. Both brands aim to cater to customers in this market segment who seek vehicles that suit their adventurous lifestyle without compromising on creature comforts found at home or in hotels.

The only challenge for buyers now is deciding between VW's and Ford's offerings. However, the wait won't be long, as the 2024 Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be revealed on Thursday, August 24, 2023, followed shortly by VW's California. Hopefully, at least one of them will be available in North America this time.
