Peugeot E-308 SW estate: A Polished Electric Wagon

The Peugeot E-308 SW is a well-resolved and practical EV with a premium finish. It is a car that deserves consideration in the market for zero-emissions estates. The EV powertrain offers sensible performance and solid range. While there may be slicker rivals in the future, the E-308 SW is currently one of the best electric load-luggers available.

The Peugeot 308 was one of the first family hatchbacks to introduce an all-electric version. However, the estate variant remained petrol-only until now. The new E-308 SW enters the relatively rare market of all-electric estates, with no obvious rivals apart from the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer and the MG5. More expensive zero-emissions wagons are expected in the next 18 months, but mainstream brands like Skoda won't enter the arena until 2026.

The ride comfort of the E-308 SW hasn't been compromised. While there are some classic traits of the car's underpinnings, such as an inability to smooth out sharp inputs, it's a minor occurrence. Overall, the car offers a good mix of compliance and composure, making it a more complete package than the MG5.

The performance of the E-308 SW is brisk, but not rapid. The more powerful motor defaults back to the previous output in normal mode, and to get the full punch, the car needs to be in Sport mode. There's a slight delay in the system delivering the traditional EV shove, but it doesn't significantly affect the driving experience. The powertrain responds better to a smooth approach than aggressive driving.

The E-308 SW has a revised range structure, starting with the Allure trim that offers various features. The GT trim adds additional tech and styling flourishes, but it may not be worth the extra cash. The 3D display is seen as a gimmick, and the interface could be simplified for better usability. However, the physical shortcut buttons and touch panel are steps in the right direction compared to previous Peugeot models.

The rear cabin of the E-308 SW offers generous knee and legroom, although taller passengers may find it challenging to get in and out due to the rakish roofline. The boot capacity is the same as the hybrid 308 SW, with the option to increase it by lowering the rear seats. The boot also has a low lip, making it easy to load heavy items. Peugeot has yet to confirm the UK prices, but it is estimated to be around £1,000 more than the equivalent E-308 hatchback.

The Peugeot E-308 SW GT 54KWH 156 is priced at around £43,250. It features a 54kWh battery, 1x e-motor, and offers a power/torque of 154bhp/270Nm. The transmission is a single-speed auto, and it is a front-wheel drive. The estimated 0-62mph time is 9.3 seconds, with a top speed of 93mph. The range is expected to be up to 248 miles, and it can be charged at 100kW, with a 20-80% charge in 25 minutes.
